Figuring The Average Nursing Home Cost

Doctor holding stethoscope to piggy bank

The average nursing home cost has been increasing in recent years. Most people are not aware how expensive the services are. They only realize it when they are struggling to meet their payments. When this happens you do not know who to approach in order to get advice on long term care, its benefits, and funding options or even how to find a decent service provider.

You are disqualified from financial assistance if your assets exceed a certain limit. The sponsors usually assume that such a person has the capacity to fund themselves. It does not matter how much you are worth; any person paying for nursing home care needs financial advice on how to avoid unnecessary taxes and how to protect themselves from running out of funds. In case a person is unable to meet their financial obligations they are put under state care. In such situations the state chooses the nursing home care you get sent to.

This situation can be stressful for you and your family because on top of meeting the financial and legal requirements, you need to deal with a relative’s illness. This makes it hard for you to make the right financial decisions and you end up losing claims that you are entitled to.

Here is some basic information to use when figuring out average nursing home costs:

  • Assess your needs
  • Get financial advice
  • Weigh your investment options
  • Claim the right benefits

Local authorities are supposed to assess senior citizens even if they can meet the average nursing home cost. The local authority may refuse to fund your nursing care but you still get to discuss your situation with a health professional. Taking the assessment does not translate into going for nursing care. There are people who end up adapting their current residency, getting the care they need from their homes or moving into sheltered accommodation instead. In case your condition changes you can have your needs reassessed.

In case you need nursing care and cannot afford it, the local authority will assess your needs, find the right care home for you and cover the charges. If you are categorized as a self-sponsor they give you information about various care homes.  You will be told:

  • Why you did not get state help
  • Contact details of local care homes
  • How to choose the right service provider

There are professionals who discuss financial options for people who need nursing home care. You can meet the average nursing home cost using revenue from your investments, rental income from your house, sell your property and use the money accrued from the sale to pay for the home care or get an immediate needs annuity.

A lot of people find it easier to sell their homes in order to finance the care services. You can sell your home and put the money into an account. You can invest the proceeds from the sale of your house but there are some risks involved. An annuity is the best option because you will never run out of funds to pay for the services.
