Rockville Seniors and Activity: The Benefits of Staying Active – Part II

In part one of this two-part blog series, we looked into some ways seniors who live at home can remain active on a regular basis. Staying active is important for people who are aging, and there are a number of simple ways to ensure you stay active and healthy.

At Comfort Home Care, moving your body is just one of the many positive ways we help our clients stay healthy.  We have a wide range of senior home care services in which to help our clients live happy and independent lives.

Make Use of Technology

In many cases, seniors find that they’re able to stay active and engaged with the help of technology. While it’s important not to spend all day glued to a screen, making use of things like Skype, FaceTime, and social media can help you stay connected to loved ones near and far. These connections can provide valuable social interaction, which is an important part of staying active as we age.

In addition, there are plenty of apps and other online resources that can help you stay on top of things like exercise, diet, and more. A quick Google and/or YouTube search can walk you through an exercise routine, provide you with a new recipe, or teach you how to knit.  With so much information readily available at our fingertips, there’s no excuse not to take advantage of it and use it to live a healthier life.

Get Outside

According to the EPA, there are 2-10x more pollutants inside your home than outside, and these pollutants are responsible for 50% of all illnesses. So get outside and breathe the fresh air. It is a great way to get your daily activity in.

Take a walk around the block, plant some flowers, and chat with a neighbor over the fence. If you are feeling more adventurous, join a walking club or a hiking group. Getting involved with a group will connect you to new people who share your same interests.

Explore

When was the last time you went to the movies or the theater? Lose yourself in the story they tell. Spend the afternoon at a museum. Join a book club. By expanding your mind by learning a new skill or a new topic you keep your mind fresh which can help deter brain disease.

Help of Quality Home Care

Quality senior home care services can play a vital role in helping seniors stay active. Your caregivers can provide transportation, join you on your excursions, help shop for and prepare that new recipe, and even join you in your new exercises. Our home care professionals provide motivation and encouragement to our clients, which can go a long way in helping them stay on track with things like diet and exercise.
